So I guess everyone has heard on the news that A&E has decided to suspend Phil Robertson for making some comments against homosexuality.  I will not share with you the link because I believe that the comments that were made were vulgar and distasteful.  I don't encourage it to be read.  Besides, I think most have heard about it.  However, I will say that I agree with what Phil was saying and I think the rest of the message had a good tone.

I believe Phil has a right to voice his opinion, and I believe A&E have a right to hire, fire, and suspend whom they please.

I believe that A&E will try and get Phil to apologize so they can let him on the show.  You see, it's all about politics.  By suspending him, they are pleasing the LGBT community.  And by putting him back on, they'll get more money in their pockets because controversy always helps ratings.  I would be very surprised if they didn't let him back on the show.  I feel the only way this is possible is if the decision maker at A&E is gay themselves.  Otherwise, even if they really support LGBT, likely it won't be more than their pocketbook.

That is just my opinion.  However, it's not my issue with this whole thing.  After this happened, I have seen so much support for Phil Robertson fly across Facebook.  It makes me wonder, are we supporting Phil, or supporting his comments against homosexuality?

People are changing their profile pictures to show their support, changing their statuses and writing A&E.  I have never once seen most of these people ever publically speak out against homosexuality before.  It appears it is often only done when it is popular, or when you can at least stand behind someone popular.

I pray that this only opens a door to remind people to stand for what is right, but I fear that once the dust settles, we will go back to not speaking so openly about traditional marriage.  We'll support it, but we won't speak up....certainly not speak up in this way.

I'm not a fan of the show.  Maybe that's how I can make these statements.  I have no attachment to the Robertson Family.  I was told by about 20 people that I would love their show because of the good Christian values.  After purchasing the first season on dvd, I heard cursing in the show (not talking about the fake bleeps, but about taking my Lord's name in vain repeatedly), and that was enough for me to turn it off.  That's a personal conviction of mine.  I just mention it because it's probably the reason why I don't feel the need to be on this bandwagon.

I just  hope that everyone is supporting the cause more than the man.  Certainly Phil needs encouragement during this time, but I have a feeling he knew his comments wouldn't be popular.  Although I don't agree with how he said them, I agree with what he said.  He answered a question honestly and tried to bring it all back to Jesus.  I'm sure  he loves the support during this time, but I have a feeling that even if he didn't have much support, he'd still be standing for what he believes.

So will you?  Even if this wasn't popular right now, would you still be shouting so strong against homosexuality?  I'm glad people are doing it, but I don't want it to be a fad.  We need to preach against ALL sin, including our own.  It is my prayer that we will evaluate our own lives and strive daily to draw closer to Him!

I've also heard some say it's about the right to "free speech."  But so often, when the liberals begin bringing children to say the *f* bomb on television, we go hysterical.  Certainly they should have the same freedoms we do, even if we disagree.  What's so great about America is that we can turn OFF the television!  We don't have to see those things we disagree with!

I did not see this same outrage when the tables were turned.  FWB Family Ministires had Willie Robertson scheduled to be a speaker for one of their events.  However, after their involvement in creating wines and such, the ministry chose to drop them. They issued the following statement:

“Our greatest responsibility is to the young people we serve. Therefore, we feel that in light of the recent news, to continue with this event would send mixed messages to the young people who go through our Adolescent Drug and Alcohol program. Our message must be consistent. The lives of those children may well hang in the balance.  We certainly apologize to the people who have already purchased tickets, and pray they understand our position.”

Instead, I heard people defending them by taking the Bible out of context.  Their arguments were that "Jesus turned the water into wine."   Really?  That's how we're going to justify drinking?  We're going to overlook all other Scripture about it and not even use our defense within context?

Why did we not stand with this ministry for doing what was right, versus what was popular.  Oh yeah, they weren't a popular reality television show.

I'm hearing Christians calling for the boycott of A&E.  Why would we not have already boycotted A&E? Why is this offense more offensive than the rest?

Whatever our view on this, may we be consistent and not just go with the flow or what is popular at the time.

  1. I am not supporting Phil or bashing gays, I am defending his right to his opinion. Something that we are quickly losing here in America. Too often now if you state an opinion that is not popular you are attacked. We saw this with the CEO/owner of Chick Fil A. In both incidence the men stated their personal opinion and beliefs. American needs to wake up. I can't deny you the right to state your opinion without eventually losing my right to state my opinion. For that reason re need to support Phil and his right to state his opinion whether with agree with him or not.

  2. I do not watch the show on a regular basis. I have a distaste for many of the programs on that channel. But I will say, I agree with Phil. Maybe not his choice of wording it. But the point of what he was saying is true. God is the one that will judge the people (all people) for their actions here in this world. I don't agree with A&E for letting him go because of his beliefs. Everyone that has heard of this show, knows the beliefs that they have. A&E knew themselves when they started to broadcast the show. I guess it is all about how much more money they can pocket off the show. God teaches us to not judge others for their actions, but to love them. We do not have to agree with there actions, but we are to love them.

  3. Everyone goes crazy when things happens to celebrities. Yeah I get it...But I get sick of seeing it everywhere. People don't even care about real things that are happening in the world. Men and women all over the world are treated unfairly on a daily basis. Why outcry over this and nothing else? I know we aren't always privy to injustices but we know Christians are being persecuted right?? No one posts about that. I don't know....it just feels weird to me. I smell hypocrisy and I don't like it.

    1. You're right Cherith! There is much of this going on throughout the world and even in our Country, and my facebook never lights up when freedom of speech or worse is threatened to those. I hope that people will hold true to their values, regardless whether they are celebrity or not.

  4. My supporting Phil is not equal to speaking out against homosexuality. I'm upset because people in the LGBT community voice their opinions on their beliefs every day and no one tells them they can not do it. In fact, it is their right, correct? Everyone has the right to voice their opinion as long as it is not hurting anyone.

    1. You're right. I don't see many Christians speaking up against homosexuality at ALL. In fact, people are just now wanting to boycott A&E despite their other terrible shows for Christians to watch.
Our Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, not just when we agree with it (unless it infringes upon someone else's constitutional rights). Therefore, Phil has a right to say what he wants, but A&E has a right to hire and fire people who will represent their philosophy. I just hope people will remain consistent and stand against homosexuality when no one is standing with them. Seems the Christians don't want to step on any toes these days. They'll let Phil do it and stand behind him, but I'm afraid I don't see many Phils in this world.

  5. I support Phil and Christians. I will boycott A&E and all its shows until Phil is back on. Yes being gay is WRONG along with every other sin. But it seems nowadays, gays can get away with having sex in the streets at a gay rally and its 'NOT offensive' nothing be done about it, but like this, when someone stands up for the Word of God, its offensive! And just gonna say, you are not born gay, God would not make you in a way that would go against his Word. Yes, you are born into sin, but you change your sinful ways and follow Christ. God Bless.
